The Funeral Outfit

I love wearing colors and prints.  They just make me happy and put a bit of bounce in my step.  So, imagine my surprise when I realized that my most worn winter outfit this year was solid black and gray.  I wore it so often that my husband starting commenting.  It got named the funeral outfit.  LOL.(FYI: I would not wear this to a funeral).  Anyway, I just love the style of this dress.  It is cute and comfortable yet still allows you to completely overeat at anytime.  Perfection in my book.

Pattern:  Blank Slate Rose Dress Pattern mashed with Deer and Doe Plantain Dress

The rose dress pattern is definitely on my top 3 most made patterns list!  I made a few dresses and shirts before I decided to mash it up with the plantain dress (free pattern).  I have square wide shoulders so the original pattern armscye was a bit tight.  I gave the pre-mashed garments to my very happy daughter because the pattern fits her perfectly with zero adjustments.  Then I replace the arm and sleeve pattern pieces with the plantain dress pattern pieces for myself.  It worked out perfectly.

I also used the interfacing pattern pieces for the front and back of the front yoke on the dress.  I saw this done in a blog post by http://sewbon.com.  I loved the look of it!

This dress is amazingly comfortable to wear and sews up in a couple of hours.  The love affair is real with this one!

Fabric:  Jersey/sweater knit from JoAnn Fabrics

This is pretty cool fabric.  It is 90 % polyester and 10% wool.  I often struggle wearing that much polyester on my arms because they get super hot and itchy but this fabric is great on the skin.  It drapes like a dream and has a textured feel to it.  That 10% wool completely changed the game.  Sadly, there was only 1 1/2 yards left on the bolt.  I searched Joann's website for more but couldn't find any.  In the future, I will be keeping my eye out for this fiber content.

Bottom Line:

Based on the amount of rose dresses/shirts in my closet and my daughters, this pattern is a winner in my book.  I love it even more since I mashed it up with the plantain dress.

An Unexpected Win - Vogue 9268

This dress turned out to be a pleasant surprise!  A string of fails led me to this pattern.  I figured if I was going to fail, I might as well fail in a fun way.  The surprise of the day is that it turned out to be one of my favorite dress!

Pattern:  Vogue 9268

This is a great pattern.  It came together pretty quickly, and I loved the surprise reveal at the end with the draping(each fabric drapes differently).  The pattern pieces are strange and you actually sew the bottom hem together leaving just an opening in the center for walking.  This confused me for some reason while sewing but made complete sense when I was done.  LOL. I did move the turn in the dress down about two inches so it would sit a bit nicer on my hips.  The pictures do not do this dress justice.  It walks with a ton of flare and drama but can still be worn to the grocery store.  You got to love that combination!!

Fabric:  Who knows?

Mystery fabric I found at Colorado Fabric in Denver.  It feels like a ITY fabric.  It is the perfect fabric for this dress.  A sturdy yet flowy knit.  It hugs the body well without revealing too much and it handles the draping sides like a beast!

Bottom Line

This dress just makes me happy.  I highly recommend it to anyone that is looking for something fun and different!

Thanks for stopping by and have a great day!

A Perfect Pair

This outfit just makes me happy!  I love the way the unique sleeves work with this dress!  It is my go-to outfit when I need a little bit of extra magic in my day!

Patterns:

Overall Dress– Kommatia Skirt Style No SK702
I watched Gabby and Megan make this pattern on Gabby's YouTube channel (vlog28) and I fell in love with it.  The back design was just what I was looking for.  The pattern was very easy to put together.  I was a bit worried about the back yoke, but everything fit perfectly.  There were no pictures included in the directions, but each pattern piece has dots and numbers that line the seams up with each other. It was kind of like playing connect the dots while sewing and it made the whole process pretty effortless.

Beware this pattern is a micro-mini skirt!  So, I did add 8-inches to the length and I added a bit of width to the bottom half of the skirt.  Basically, I kept the side seam line straight instead of allowing it to taper in.

Top – Adrienne Blouse by Friday Pattern Co.
There is a good reason why this pattern was such a runway hit.  It is a beautiful statement piece that is also super easy and fast to sew!  How often to do you find that combination in the pattern world?  It also only has three pattern pieces!  The way the shirt is put together makes it easy to adjust the fit at the end.  After I put it all together, I felt like the underarms were hanging a bit low (a common problem in my world).  So, I just took the whole seam were the sleeves connect to the front and back in a bit and voil!

I was a bit worried the sleeves would fall down or not stay in place as I went about my day, but they do!!  A bit of magic went in to the drafting of this pattern!

Fabric:

Kommatia Skirt Style SK702– Kaufman Ventana Twill Black
I had the Kaufman twill in my stash and it worked perfectly.  I lined the whole thing with black ambiance rayon because I will often wear it with leggings.

I think the drape and weight of this fabric was just perfect for this top.  I loved sewing and wearing this fabric so much I ordered it in more colors!

Thanks so much for stopping by and have a great day!
